When you use the developer version of a language model like ChatGPT, you’re given access to an unusual knob, called the “temperature”. You can set it to high, low, or somewhere in between.
- Set it too low, and the AI becomes stuck in rigid thought patterns, sometimes even repeating the same phrase hundreds of times.
- Turn it up high, and the AI enters an almost psychedelic state, mixing poetry, computer code, and babble from multiple foreign languages at once.
By default, AI companies set the temperature to a happy medium that keeps the AI sane while retaining some creativity.
What does temperature tell us about AI minds, relative to our own? It’s hard to tell. At present, we have almost zero understanding of how these AI minds function internally.
Nonetheless, we can attempt to draw some parallels. If a human is thinking about baseball, their brain seems to naturally focus on related ideas—memorable plays, specific teams. But a human also does some amount of free association. Maybe talk of the Red Sox serves as a reminder to do laundry.
The AI’s free associations are wild by contrast. Interacting with ChatGPT can give the impression that AI will turn out just like us. But turning up the temperature serves as yet another sign that we are dealing with some truly alien minds.
